These food and beverage trends might help boost 2016 sales for your business A fter a couple of really good years for sales and profit growth, single-store owners are surprisingly cautious about their 2016 business prospects despite a slowly improving national economy. This is our annual Forecast Issue, containing the convenience store industry's only financial analysis of projected product category forecasts, something we've been doing exclusively for the past 14 years (see page 20), and our long-running national economic forecast by Maureen Maguire, advising economist for Convenience Store News for the Single Store Owner and flagship publication Convenience Store News. This report also includes our relatively newer Retailer Forecast Study, measur- ing both chains' and single-store operators' view of the coming year, as well as our brand-new Supplier Forecast Study, which looks at the convenience channel's prospects from the vendors' point-of-view. Only two-thirds of single-store owners said they expect their in-store sales to in- crease in 2016, compared to nearly 90 percent of chain operators who expect to see increased sales. Additionally, 8.3 percent of single-store owners expect their store's sales to decline this year vs. only 3.7 percent of chain retailers who feel that way. Based on our forecast, we think retailers should be a bit more optimistic. One category we think will continue to grow for all c-store retailers is foodservice. So, if you're feeling a bit glum about 2016 sales, perhaps these food and beverage trends from experts at research firms Mintel and The NPD Group will provide you with some ideas to grow your sales in the year ahead. Eco is the new reality. Consumer worries about "drought, food waste and other natural phenomena will not only affect the worldwide food and drink sup- ply, but influence preparation and production," said Menny Zegler, Mintel global food and drink analyst. In 2016, sustainability evolves from "being good for the bottom line to being a necessary part of new product development for the com- mon good," she predicts. Success isn't so sweet. Since fewer consumers are concerned about avoiding fats, the top ingredient adults avoid now is sugar. "This is true for both main meal times as well as snack time," said Darren Seifer, food and beverage industry analyst for NPD. Shopping with a cause. "In today's Internet age, it's easier for consumers to be more aware of how products reach the shelf," noted Seifer. "And as more consum- ers seek humanely raised animals and avoid antibiotics in their meats, for exam- ple, we expect more of them to research brands and their production practices." I expect food and beverages will have a banner year at convenience stores in 2016, especially for those retailers who stay atop these trends.
