22 / Convenience Store News for the Single Store Owner / DECEMBER 2016 and logos, and exterior property and landscaping. Construction or remodeling of eligible stores must have taken place between January 2015 and April 2016. Winners were selected based on innovation, creativity, and the positive impact of the design and/ or remodel on the overall business. Awards were presented separately to single stores and chains. This year's single-store honorees, spanning five categories, are: I t's been said, good things come in small packages. The winners of the 2016 Conve- nience Store News for the Single Store Owner Store Design Contest certainly give credence to this saying. Now in its sixth year, the awards program honors new and rebuilt independently operated convenience stores whose designs excel in areas such as interior layout, use and effectiveness of signage BIG on CREATIVITY This year's winning single stores prove size has nothing to do with innovation BY DANIELLE ROMANO Best Original Design Winner: Morton's, Hallettsville, Texas Designer: Paragon Solutions Owners Diane and Randy Morton had two special individuals in mind when creating this 7,000-square-foot convenience store and diner. The first is Diane's father, who provided the bulk of "attractions" to the location. The second is Rowdy, the Mortons' lovable pooch. It is thanks to these inspirations that Morton's finishes are dis- tinctly unique, with antiques canvassing every crevice of the store, including Elvis Presley-inspired pieces. Morton's colors and furnishings also evoke a "'blast from the past' vibe that you half expect the cast of 'Grease' to come strutting through the doors," designer Paragon Solutions said. The diner leads customers into the c-store, which is kept stocked with local Texas food offerings and a beer cooler, as well as family-friendly restrooms. In addition, as homage to Rowdy, Mor- ton's serves as a pet pit stop, complete with bubbler pet fountains, trees and a picnic table.
