Grab-and-go/prepackaged food is the most popular type of prepared food, preferred by 42.6 percent of consumers, followed by made-to-order food at 38.8 per- cent. Survey participants spent an average of $33.22 a month on prepared food, with respon- dents who have children in the household and those in the $75,000-$99,999 income bracket each topping $40. Lunchtime remains the busiest time for prepared food visits to a convenience store, with 24.2 percent of customers making a purchase from 11 a.m. to 1:59 p.m., followed by 23.7 per- cent doing so during the 4 p.m. to 6:59 p.m. window. The most popular types of prepared food — hot dogs, deli/ sandwiches, pizza and breakfast sandwiches — are also the easiest to eat on the go, reflecting custom- ers' interest in a convenient meal. Fountain drinks, bottled or canned soda, and bottled water are the items most frequently purchased alongside prepared food, revealing an opportunity for retailers to capi- talize by offering bundled deals. The percentage of consumers who said they ate their last pre- pared c-store food purchase inside the car jumped from 45.3 percent last year to 51.2 percent this year, while the percentage who said they took it home to eat fell from 33.3 percent to 27.2 percent. Along with prepared food, buy- ing dispensed beverages is part of consumers' routines. Nearly two-thirds (65.7 percent) of those surveyed said they purchased cold or frozen dispensed beverages at a c-store in the last month, with 24.8 percent saying they did so twice, 18.8 percent saying they did so once, and 18.5 percent saying they did so 5-9 times.
